What Is Dentinal Hypersensitivity?
Dentinal hypersensitivity is typically characterised by a short, sharp pain arising from exposed dentin in response to external triggers such as hot, cold, sweet, acidic, or tactile stimuli. Dentin is the layer beneath the enamel and contains microscopic channels called dentinal tubules. When dentin becomes exposed due to enamel loss or gum recession, external stimuli can affect the nerves inside the tooth, resulting in sudden sensitivity. However, similar symptoms can also occur due to cavities, cracked teeth, defective fillings, or dental infections, which is why accurate diagnosis is important.
Common Symptoms of Dentinal Hypersensitivity :
The most common symptom is a sudden, sharp pain that usually lasts for a short period. Sensitivity may occur when you:
- Drink cold water, juices, or cold beverages
- Consume hot tea, coffee, or food
- Eat sweets or acidic foods
- Brush or floss your teeth
- Breathe in cold air
- Touch certain areas of your teeth
The sensitivity may affect one tooth, several teeth, or multiple areas of the mouth.
What Causes Sensitive Teeth?
Several factors can contribute to dentinal hypersensitivity, commonly known as tooth sensitivity. Gum recession can expose the roots of the teeth, which lack the same protective enamel covering as the tooth crown, making them more vulnerable to sensitivity. Enamel erosion caused by frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages, acid reflux, or other sources of acid exposure can gradually wear away the protective enamel and expose the underlying dentin. Brushing too aggressively or using a hard-bristled toothbrush may also contribute to enamel wear and gum recession. Tooth decay can cause sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and may require restorative dental treatment. Cracked or damaged teeth can also lead to sensitivity, particularly while biting or when exposed to temperature changes. Additionally, teeth grinding and clenching, known as bruxism, can cause tooth wear and damage the protective tooth structure. Some patients may also experience temporary sensitivity after dental procedures such as teeth whitening or fillings; however, persistent or severe sensitivity should always be evaluated by a dentist.
